Mounting a light less than 2 feet away from a wall will produce a grazing effect whereas a distance over 2 5 feet will widen the angle of the light beam and wash a wall out.

Three rules of wall grazing.
Both techniques will draw people s eyes to a wall but which technique is right will depend on the material of the wall and the effect you want to create.
In a wall grazing detail the fixture is positioned very close to the wall no further away than 12 inches in order to highlight and bring out the wall texture.
In a wallwash detail the luminaire is typically a minimum of 12 inches away from the wall plane allowing for an even application of light that gives the wall texture a flat appearance.
